Monday 14th June - Sunshine

Starring Ralph Fiennes and Rachel Weisz

Ralph Fiennes (The End of the Affair, The English Patient) stars in this epic story of a family that rise above their humble origins to positions of wealth and power only to fall victim to the events which defined Europe during the 20th century. A history of courage, love and faith and the three generations of men caught up in the war-swept 20th century.

Although Sunshine was made by a Hungarian, Istvan Szabo, it is an English language picture, and Maurice Jarre's music recalls his score for Doctor Zhivago. 'Sunshine' is a literal translation of Sonnenschein, the family name of the central characters. Ralph Fiennes rises to the awesome challenge of creating three absolute distinct characters who all share the same congenital weaknesses, an aching potential for greatness.

This is a film of considerable beauty and sometimes shattering power, and as an essay on "family values" it is well-nigh definitive.
